Costumes are power, conjured from pants, hats, ruffles and other clothing items placed together to drive a statement. The great playwright, William Shakespeare, provides an enticing opportunity for a costume designer. A Shakespeare costume can be as elaborate or simple as your design chooses to be. Authentic Elizabethan-era costumes can be created by sewing dramatically high colors and puffy, darted sleeves onto an otherwise average blouse or jacket pattern designs. Simpler costumes can be created by employing various clothing items and modifying them to present the idea of Shakespeare. As with any costume, the finishing touch is within the wearer's confidence.
Instructions
1. Choose a pair of black, green, burgundy, yellow or gold-colored tights. Put the tights on and put a pair of bungee pants over them. Pull the pants up to your knees and tighten the cord. Hide the cord on the inside of the pants hem. Stuff the pants with pillow stuffing, dish towels or wads of paper to create a fluffy area around the knees.
2. Wear the white, button-down shirt over the pants. Button it up as far into the neckline as it will. Pin large ruffles or doilies around the neckline to the collar.
3. Pin ruffles or doilies around the wrist of the shirt, allowing them to hang down 2 inches over the hands.
4. Put on a fluffy, Renaissance period hat. Put on black boots or buckled loafers. Tie a curtain cord around your waist within the belt loops. Choose a cord in a deep, bright color, such as gold, dark red, deep purple or yellow. Allow the cord's tassels to hang loosely.
5. Grab a faux ostrich-feathered pen and a Shakespeare book as costume accessories. Smear a bit of black ink on your fingertips.
