Craft Suggestions For Birthday Celebration

Include a craft project for your child's birthday party to give the kids a calm activity that promotes creativity.

Setting up various craft stations, or at least one craft station, for a birthday party will keep children occupied and entertained while giving them a handmade party favor. Crafts should reflect the birthday party theme and be age-appropriate for your guests. Ask your child for input on what sort of craft she wants to do at her birthday party.

Beading

Many children enjoy making jewelry. Younger children can make friendship bracelets or simple necklaces for themselves or their mothers using thick string and large beads. Older children might enjoy creating earrings, bracelets or necklaces with smaller beads in more intricate designs. This works for a variety of parties, including sleepovers, princess themes or simple makeover parties.

Painting

Painting can involve anything from finger paints for little ones or fabric paints for older children or teens. Encourage the children to paint creatively, while staying within the party's theme. For example, read a story about ocean characters and encourage the kids to paint an ocean scene, or gather white t-shirts, pillow cases or aprons for older kids to decorate to their liking. Painting pillow cases is perfect for sleepovers and aprons are perfect for cooking parties.

Magnets

Magnets are great crafts for younger children because they allow creativity, they're smaller and easy for parents to display where the kids can still enjoy their handiwork. Use a basic magnet and paper or craft foam to create a magnet that falls within the theme of the party. Older kids can make more detailed, difficult magnets. For example, a little girl's tea party can consist of flower magnets using multiple pieces and colors of paper or foam. A little boy's dinosaur party can consist of each guest making their favorite dinosaur out of paper or foam. An adult (or two) should assemble the magnets with hot glue when the children move on to the next party activity.

Picture Perfect

Picture frames or scrapbook pages are another birthday craft that promotes creativity. Use simple wooden frames that the kids can paint, add buttons, glitter, craft foam or other decorations to. Scrapbook pages can consist of different papers, craft scissors, stamps and embellishments. Put scrapbook pages together to make a memory album for the birthday child, or allow each guest to make one to keep and one to leave. Complete a picture frame project by inserting a picture of the group or child in each one if you have a digital camera and can print the pictures during the party.

Masks

Create masks with simple paper patterns for younger kids, or get elaborate with feathers, glitter and beads for older kids. Masks can fit into nearly any theme and allow the kids to get creative with their crafts, as well as encourage them to play make-believe by taking on a new character. For example, a farm or jungle animal party can consist of making animal masks and letting the kids pretend to be their chosen animal.
