Chicken & Egg Crafts

Drain the yolk from an egg and slip a secret message inside.

You may not know whether the chicken or egg came first, but that shouldn't keep you from incorporating these playful elements in your craft projects and home decor. Whether you're looking for a project you and your 4-year-old can do together, a more challenging craft you can complete on your own or an egg-themed gift for someone, you can find a way to center it around a chicken or egg.

Baby Chick Crafts

Feature some baby chicks for your newborn's nursery or for sunny kitchen decor. Use felt, craft feathers or yellow faux fur to cut out the shape of a chick. Cut a polystyrene egg in half and place a bit of Easter grass on it, then glue the chick on top. You can also use white construction paper or felt to cut out a tiny top portion of the egg on the chic's head, or try to carve it out of the polystyrene. For younger kids, have them draw and color a chick or create a chick sock puppet with your help. Use orange felt for the beaks and legs and faux yellow down feathers for their "hair."

Painted and Faberge Eggs

Faberge eggs are a traditional Russian craft involving elaborately painted, gilded and embellished eggs. You can create the same effect with a little patience and creativity. Paint a polystyrene or drained egg -- though the real egg must be handled carefully -- with acrylic paint. Use adhesive border strips in a silver or gold hue vertically and horizontally on the egg, leaving checkerboard spaces. Place flower gemstones and sequins in each of the spaces with glue. Let the egg dry, and create a stand for it with a strip of cardboard glued in a circle and decorated with gemstones and sequins.

Egg Gifts and Decor

Even if you're not working with actual eggs, you can use faux eggs for egg-themed crafts. Crack a faux egg in half and fill it with Easter grass or shredded pieces of brown bag. Place tiny faux eggs inside, and decorate the eggs with butterfly, rabbit and even chicken stickers. You can also use egg cups as tiny succulent planters. For a quick centerpiece, you can always take a trip to your local farmer's market and arrange colorful eggs in your favorite decorative bowl. Send a secret message to someone by draining the yolk from an egg with a large pin, and letting it dry. Tightly roll up your message on a long strip of paper, and push it through the large pinhole. Box up the egg and include a note that says "crack me."

Kitschy Kitchen Decor

If you just adore chickens, make them part of your home. If you have knitting skills, make tiny hens that can house a single fake egg inside. The egg gives them their shape, and the round knit bodies of the hens stretch over the egg. You can also typically find chicken porcelain figurines at a local stoneware studios. Many of these studios teach classes on ceramics painting. Take five or six figurines and paint them realistically, or cover them in bold hues like hot pink, cobalt or purple for a quirky accent piece.
