How You Can Evaluate Put on On Trailer Tires

Keep your trailer tires properly maintained.

Maintaining your car requires a lot of knowledge. Mechanics can help you make sure your car is running efficiently and safely, but knowing a few facts about cars can save you money or even prevent an accident. Learning how to analyze the wear of a trailer tire will help you catch potential structural flaws in the tires so you can transport items safely.

Instructions

1. Examine all of your trailer tires with a pressure gauge. Unscrew the inflation valve caps on each tire and place the caps in your pocket so you do not lose them. Connect the pressure gauge to one tire at a time and get a pressure reading for each tire. Each tire should have a reading of 30 to 40 PSI. Add air to your tires if they read below 30 PSI; if they read above 40 PSI, release some air until the pressure lowers to the correct level. Place the inflation valve caps back on your tires.

2. Run your hand over the center tread of your tires; if your tires are over-inflated the center tread will be worn down. Run your hand over the outer treads of your tires; if your tires are under-inflated the outer treads will be worn down. Inflate or deflate tires as necessary, or replace tires that are excessively worn.

3. Run your hand across the full width of the tire to check for any abnormalities that indicate alignment problems, such as excessive wear on one side or dips around the edges, or "cupping." If your tires show signs of one-side wear or cupping, take your trailer to your mechanic to realign your tires.

4. Check for feathering. Run your hand from left to right across the width of your tire. If, when running your hand in one direction the tire is smooth and the opposite direction the tire has a sharp edge, your tires are feathered. If your tires are feathered, have them replaced and have a mechanic examine the in-toe setting and bushings.
