Steps To Make A Halloween Mask With Flour & Food Coloring

Decorate your masks when they are finished.

Halloween can be a pricey holiday when it comes to buying costumes. The more kids you have the more you have to spend at a costume store to buy the mask each child wants. Making masks at home will make the Halloween experience more fun and less expensive. Kids or adults can design and paint their masks to be exactly what they want them to look it. Some costumes cannot be found in the stores, but if you make your costume at home you can use your imagination to become any character you wish to be.

Instructions

1. Blow a balloon up to about the size of your head.

2. Mix flour, water and the color food dye you wish to use for you mask in a medium-sized bowl. You want the mixture to become a paste so, depending on the amount of water or flour you add at first, you may need to put more of either into the mixture.

3. Cut thin white computer paper into approximately 2-inch wide vertical strips. Take each piece and dip both sides into the paste. Keep the paper in the paste for about 15 seconds on each side.

4. Cover half of the balloon with the strips of paste and paper until the whole half is neatly and completely covered. You can leave two spaces open for eye holes and one for your mouth if you choose to. If you feel this is too difficult, wait to cut them out after the mask has dried.

5. Let the strips of paper dry on the balloon until a hard shell forms. When the shell has dried, put more pasted paper on the balloon and let it dry again. The paper is pasted on twice to make sure the mask is strong.

6. Pop the balloon when the shell has dried. Once you have your mask shape, cut out the eyes and a mouth if you didn't do this previously. Cut two holes on either side of the mask and lace an elastic string through both sides. This string will go around your head to keep the mask in place.

7. Use paint and different decorations to design your mask. Use a hot glue gun to glue items onto your mask to make it unique.
