Rainforest Bird Crafts

Offer kids various colors to complete Macaw art crafts.

Tropical rain forests are forests with tall trees, warm climate and lots of rain. They are found on numerous continents such as Africa, Asia, Australia and Central America. Various species of birds call these forests home. Use their bright colors for inspiration and complete visually appealing and interesting crafts. Hands-on activities engage students in the subject matter.

Hand Print Macaw

A hand print macaw craft project enables kids to get dirty and express themselves. Suitable for both preschool and older age children, students enjoy wiping paint on themselves and creating original art pieces with their bodies. Start by making numerous sheets of blue, yellow, red and pink construction paper available to all participants. Instruct children to trace the outline of both their hands onto three sheets of paper -- one blue, one red and one yellow page. Next, trace one foot onto a pink sheet of paper, then cut out all tracings. Add eyes and a beak to the heel of the foot with a marker. Glue the palms of the hand prints up and down the backside of the pink foot outline, creating the look of feathers.

Tropical Birds at Night

"Tropical Birds at Night" requires white construction paper and a healthy dose of imagination. Post pictures of at least three bird pictures on the blackboard for reference prior to starting this craft. The harpy eagle, green macaw and lorikeet are three colorful options. Begin by instructing children to color the entire side of their white paper with color crayons. Next, color over all those colors with a black crayon. Scrape off the black crayon with a craft stick in the design of the bird you've selected from the front board. Brush away all crayon shavings to find a single bird image in the middle. Laminate drawings as desired.

Feather Birds

Prior to beginning this activity, hand draw or locate a picture of an outline of a rain forest bird. Make enough copies so that each student can have one. Feathers, glue and scissors are additional necessary materials. Instruct children to cut out the birds and glue feathers onto both sides of the page. Add colored sequins or buttons for eyes and allow to dry. Hole punch the top of the head; weave ribbon through it, tie it off and hang to enjoy.

Toucans

Complete a simple toucan activity in a short period of time and use the final products to teach children about the animals of the rain forest. Print one copy of a template like the one offered on the Enchanted Learning website and make enough copies for every participant. Post a finished colored picture on the blackboard or overhead projector screen for reference while working. Instruct all kids to match the numbers to the provided color key and fill in all spaces accordingly. Markers, colored pencils or crayons are applicable decorating materials.
