You can create inexpensive pendant lighting with plastic spoons.
Pendant lights can add a touch of drama to any room. While these fixtures are high on style, they are sometimes high in price as well. There are many ways to create inexpensive pendant lighting fixtures with reusable items, such as plastic spoons, that yield surprisingly attractive results without breaking the bank. The outcome is a pendant lighting fixture that adds ambient light and sparks conversation at the same time.
Instructions
1. Lay a spoon on a cutting mat, and carefully use a craft knife to cut the handle off each spoon. Remove the spoon 3/4 inch from its shoulder. Cut approximately 270 spoons.
2. Cut the bottom off the plastic bottle with a craft knife. Make a plunge cut to begin the process, and gently follow the circumference of the entire bottle bottom edge. Pull the cut bottom piece away and discard. The new bottle opening serves as a bottom for the fixture.
3. Apply a medium-size drop of hot glue to the 3/4-inch stem area of the bowl side of the spoon. Affix the spoon face down on the bottom edge of the outside of the bottle. Repeat the process until the plastic spoon heads run around the entire circumference of the bottle to create the first row.
4. Hot glue subsequent rows of plastic spoons over the base layer. Work in a row fashion, and glue the face-down spoons so that half of the spoon overlaps the row underneath it. This process ensures a full appearance and minimal bare spots.
5. Glue the feather boa around the top curved area of the bottle so that it covers the raw edges of the plastic spoons and adds texture and style to the fixture. Cut off any excess, or go around the bottle twice, as suits your eye.
6. Remove the lid from the bottle and puncture a medium-sized hole in it with an awl. Make two additional small holes on either side of the lid.
7. Cut a 12-inch length of wire, and thread each ending through the side holes. Twist them closed to serve as a hanger light fixture. Screw the lid back on the bottle.
8. Place the socket and cord set inside the bottle and thread the electrical wire through the middle lid opening. Pull the electrical cord through all the way, leaving the socket part inside.
9. Screw a 4-watt cool paper lantern light bulb in the socket opening to illuminate the pendant lighting fixture with soft, ambient light. It is essential to use only a small-wattage bulb, as plastic can melt when subjected to too much heat.
10. Drill a small pilot hole in the ceiling and screw a large-size cup hook into the opening. Hang the plastic spoon pendant light from its wire hanger, and plug it into a nearby outlet.
