Steps To Make Fleece Boa Jewelry

Wearing a heavy coat will help protect you from the cold winter air, but it leaves your neck exposed to drafts. Keep your neck warm in a stylish way with a fleece boa. With a few strips of fleece, some simple cuts and a single straight seam, you can make your own fleece boa in roughly 30 minutes. Fleece boa scarves also make easy homemade gifts when you are tight on time.

Instructions

1. Cut three to five strips of fleece. Cut the strips to 5-by-60 inches for an adult's scarf, and 5-by-40 inches for a child's scarf. Lay the fleece out on a cutting mat and use a rotary cutter guided by a ruler to make the cuts. Cut all the strips from one color or pattern of fleece or use multiple colors and patterns.

2. Stack all the fleece strips with the ends lined up. Use straight pins to hold the layers together by pinning them down the middle of the strips lengthwise.

3. Sew down the center of the stack lengthwise with a straight stitch. Stitch back and forth along the first and last half-inch of the seam to prevent the seam from unraveling over time. Remove the straight pins as you sew before they go under the machine's needle so you don't bend a pin or break the needle.

4. Measure and mark every inch along the length of the top layer of fleece with tailor's chalk. Make these marks along both long edges.

5. Snip into the fleece at each of the chalk marks. Make the cuts so they stop roughly a quarter-inch from the seam. Be careful not to cut the seam.

6. Hold one end of the scarf by pinching the seam between your thumb and index finger. Wrap your other hand around the scarf at that same end. Pull straight down on the scarf with the hand wrapped around it to ruffle the layers of the scarf. Repeat this motion in the other direction. Do this as many times as it takes to re-create the fullness of a feather boa.
