Steps To Make An Old Egyptian Headdress For Any Toy

Egyptians worshipped many dieties represented in their head dresses.

A headdress is similar to a hat, but it has different meanings for the person who wears it. It can represent a position of authority or membership in a particular tribe or community. In Ancient Egypt, the icon or symbol on the head dress represented a god, goddess or idea that the wearer worshipped. Making an Egyptian head dress for a doll is straightforward, provided you have basic tools. Allow a morning or afternoon to complete the task.

Instructions

1. Look through the Egyptian books to get a greater understanding of the types of headdresses worn by ancient Egyptians. You'll see that Egyptian headdresses are often a simple band with a symbol attached, so look out for these. Find an image you like.

2. Make a rough sketch of the symbol you have chosen during step 1. This will form the basis of the head dress. Copy the shape from the Egyptian book you looked through to make it easier. For example, Ma'at is depicted wearing a ostrich feather attached to a band around her head. The feather symbolizes truth.

3. Measure the circumference of the doll's head to obtain the correct sized band for the headdress. Wrap a length of string around the widest part of the doll's head and cut it to length.

4. Cut a rectangular strip of cardboard, with a 1/2-inch diameter. If you are making a headdress for a larger doll, simply make the diameter wider so that it fits properly. Place the length of string flat next to the strip of cardboard and cut it to the same length.

5. Draw the Egyptian symbol onto a separate piece of cardboard and cut it out using the scissors. For example, cut out the shape of a scorpion to represent the Egyptian goddess Serqet.

6. Paint the strip of cardboard and the Egyptian symbol you made from cardboard. Use bright colors, as these were often used in ancient Egypt. Leave the cardboard pieces to dry.

7. Put the headdress together. Glue the two shorter ends of the cardboard strip together. Overlap them slightly to achieve this, then affix the Egyptian symbol to the circular band. Simply glue it onto the band. Give the headdress time to dry.

8. Place the head dress on the doll's head.
