Get set to make movie magic happen at your party.
Old Hollywood used lush fabrics like satin and velvet, elegant crystal and polished silver to add texture and dimension to black and white pictures, creating images that remain powerful decades later. You can bring that Hollywood glamour to a birthday celebration by using the same blend of dark and light with shimmering accents to create an unforgettable party.
Instructions
1. Start the excitement at the front door by having local teenagers act as paparazzi. Have them line up by the front door, yelling for people to pose. Run red vinyl along the ground up to the front door to provide an elegant entryway. Consider hanging shimmering beads from the front door that guests have to walk through to enter the party.
2. Choose a color scheme of black and gold, with touches of silver. Cover small tables with black velvet tablecloths. As centerpieces, fill silver vases with white flowers and large black feathers, available at most craft stores. Have white candles in simple crystal holders. Many party stores will rent crystal candelabras for a more dramatic look. Have silver ice buckets loaded with bottles of champagne set at each table. Have soundtracks from classic movies playing in the background. Serve martinis in classic martini glasses.
3. Ask guests to dress in formal gowns for the occasion, preferably in black and white. Consider hiring celebrity lookalikes for the occasion of such vintage stars as Humphrey Bogart or Marilyn Monroe, and have them pose with guests for pictures. Alternately, have life-size photos of glamorous stars positioned around the room for photo opportunities with guests and the birthday celebrant.
4. Make party favors of cookies cut in the shape of vintage motion picture cameras. Hold a trivia contest that asks questions about movies that are favorites of the birthday celebrant, and give DVDs of the films as prizes.
