Large Pinecone Crafts

Pinecones are plentiful during the colder months when trees tend to shed. Large pinecones can make easy craft projects for recyclable children's art, as well as adult crafts. You can use the pinecone crafts to decorate, display for special holidays or give away as gifts to family and friends.

Wreath

For a one-of-a-kind door wreath, you will need a basket full of large pinecones, a store-bought grapevine wreath, a hot glue gun and wire ribbon. Using the hot glue gun, attach the pinecones all the way around the grapevine wreath, covering the edges as well. Once dry, take colored wire ribbon and weave it in and out of the pinecones, using a small amount of glue if needed and tying a bow at the top.

Bird Feeders

Hand-crafted bird feeders are easy to assemble using larger pinecones. You will need peanut butter mixed with regular butter or margarine, birdseed and string. Spread the peanut butter mixture around the entire pinecone and into any spaces. Roll or hand-spread birdseed to the sticky area. Using a small needle or knife point to make a hole at the top of the pinecone, put the string or twine through the hole and hang on a nearby tree.

Festive Craft

For the holidays, craft a number of faux Christmas trees using large pinecones. With a bottle of glue or small hot glue gun, place a small amount of glue on various petals of the pinecone. Place colored beads to resemble traditional ball ornaments, or make miniature red and white candy canes from construction paper. Use as table centerpieces or group together as a festive holiday display.

Thanksgiving Craft

For a Thanksgiving craft for children, supply them each with one large pinecone, glue, colored construction paper, an acorn and a marker. Have each child cut out turkey feathers in different colors for the tail, attaching them with glue. Glue on an acorn for the turkey head, and make eyes with either a marker or by gluing on store-bought wiggly eyes. Kids can steady the wobbly turkey for display with a small amount of clay at the bottom on the pinecone.
