Luxurious simplicity.
A sensuous fabric that may at times look like it's more suited for pajamas in a forties novel than it is for Main Street city wear, satin invites you to embrace the ease that it offers for real-life luxury in a moment's notice. Slip it on, and everything changes. Yes, just like that.
Easy Luxury
Satin is a fabric that instantly dresses up an ensemble because of its silky feel. It's perfect to wear under a formal jacket or a furry coat. Paired with a tweed skirt, it lends an air of sophistication to work clothes and jazzes up a streamlined wool pencil skirt. With a lacy skirt, it may be over the top, but if the colors coordinate well, pairing a taupe, lace ruffled skirt with a mauve satin top can be feminine and irresistible. A royal indigo or gold-tone sleeveless tunic sweeping over black, brushed cotton -- or even suede pants -- creates instant drama with simplicity that a jeweled belt and earrings can finish off.
Satin Everywhere
Pairing an ivory or chocolate satin blouse with gold accessories and well-fitted jeans is a sharp look for instant relaxed glamour. A little bling never hurts to bring out the Guess girl in all of us, while a peek of a leopard bra under satin is a perfect accent, not that it has to be seen. It is important that underclothes are seamless and of a solid fabric, as opposed to lace, to prevent lumpy effects from spoiling the luxurious flowing curves of gorgeous satin.
Satin Under Cover
It's unnecessary to dress up satin because it is already a staple for classic couture. Satin can be toned down with a tailored jacket in a light wool or jersey or played up for a formal occassion with a short sequin-embellished sweater or angora shawl with ostrich feathers. It is a foundation of the classic bridal dress with a sheen that works beautifully in photographs in its elegant simplicity. When a bridal cover-up is needed, it can be topped with a pearl-beaded cashmere sweater or a lightweight silk bolero. A delicate organza scarf also makes a dazzling graceful accent around a satin strapless gown.
Satin-Smooth Trends
In pairing with satin, it's often more difficult to mismatch it than it is to create a masterpiece look with it. Every combination will have its own beauty (except maybe when paired with glittery rayon fabric or pants of an unlined, untoned shape). It makes an easier-to-wear blouse than a skirt. Cotton T-shirts can be worn under an open satin shirt for a rocker flavor. Plaid skirts or pants in light wool or brushed cotton with a black, blue, white or dark-green satin will give a fun English flair. Satin generally looks best in solids that play on its rich sheen. Occasionally a trendy paisley pattern emerges that can be a playful match for white jeans and a trench coat or cord pants and an "Austin Powers"-inspired look with a navy peacoat.
