Whether old or new, a T-shirt is a blank canvas for creativity.
Odds are you have an old T-shirt lying around somewhere, waiting to be either donated or tossed out. Before you do that, you might want to take the time to get crafty and customize your T into a handmade, one-of-a-kind work of wearable art.
Halter Top
Create a halter top to convert a T-shirt into a cooler summer shirt. Cut the sleeves and collar off, but make sure you leave enough fabric to tie around your neck. If the shirt's big, just cut a slit up the back vertically, then cut pieces that line up to be tied across horizontally, custom tailored to fit your figure. Wear a colorful camisole underneath to make the look pop.
Tarzon Ruffle Top
Cut a diagonal line across the shoulder of one sleeve and down beneath the armpit of the opposite sleeve. Cut off a few inches from the bottom of the T-shirt, then use this extra fabric to sew a ruffle across the line you just cut.
Hippie Fringe Tank
Design a fringed top. Cut off the sleeves of your shirt, deep below the armpit. Also cut off the collar into a deep V or a scoop. Make high fringe by cutting slits from the bottom up to a little above the belly button. Jenna at "New York Design Shop" also suggests tying the ends of the fringe, and then wearing a swim suit, a tube shirt, or a tank underneath.
Accessorize
Purchase some cheap bows, ribbons, zippers, or appliques from a craft store. If the shirt fits well--and if cutting or sewing isn't your thing--these accessories don't require sewing and can be simply glued on. If you have a pocket T-shirt, adding sequins or feathers to the front of the pocket is quick and instantly makes the shirt more interesting and customized.
