How You Can Overwinter The Cat Palm

The cat palm (Chamaedorea cataractarum) is native to the forests of southeastern Mexico and usually grows in or near water. It can reach 4 to 6 feet in height, and it is suitable for outdoor growing only in the United States Department of Agriculture Hardiness Zones 9a through 11. It should be planted in an area with dappled sunlight and kept moist at all times. If you live in an area that receives even light frost, grow the cat palm in a container so that you can protect it during the winter.

Instructions

1. Choose an indoor area out of direct sunlight, where the temperature will remain above 40 degrees F, in which to place your cat palm for the winter.

2. Move the palm indoors prior to the first frost.

3. Keep the soil consistently moist over the winter.

4. Move your cat palm back outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and temperatures remain above 40 degrees F.
