Create a dramatic look with your Kentucky Derby party hat.
The Kentucky Derby is an annual horse race held in Louisville, Kentucky, thus the name. It is also known for the flamboyant display of women's hats -- big and ornate straw hats that match the women's dresses. If you are hosting or attending a Kentucky Derby party, wearing a hat is a must. You can buy an expensive hat or you can make your own. With some craft materials and embellishments of your choice, you can design and create a one-of-a-kind hat that can win you some fashion points.
Instructions
1. Place the straw hat on a flat surface so that the front of the hat is facing you.
2. Wrap the wide ribbon around the bump of the hat. Hold the ribbon in place by sticking a straight pin where the tails of the ribbon meet.
3. Squirt some glue in between the hat and the inside of the ribbon every couple of inches to hold the rest of the ribbon in place.
4. Add a mesh veil. Stitch the veil to the inside of the ribbon so that the front of the veil comes down over the brim of the hat.
5. Arrange two to three feathers on the front of the hat. Glue the feathers on top of the ribbon.
6. Glue one large faux flower to cover the bottom stems of the feathers. Apply glue to attach the back of the flower petals to the bump on the hat. Glue some petals to the brim of the hat.
