Sleepover Party Birthday Ideas

Planning a sleepover birthday party can be a lot of fun for boys and girls. Sleepovers can happen all year long, with popcorn, movies and, often, no sleep at all. For a birthday party, however, a sleepover should be something a bit more special. Themed sleepover parties can make your child's birthday unforgettable.

Culinary Themed Sleepover

Plan to help the kids make their own dinner. Hand-tossing pizzas is a fun activity. Kids also enjoy a burger or taco bar, or even homemade pasta. For snacks, let them make smoothies or s'mores. For breakfast, homemade waffles are always welcome, as are omelets or a flavor-your-own-oatmeal station. Decorating birthday cakes is fun, especially if you have all the tools and cake decorating supplies. Consider baking cupcakes for the kids to decorate, or large cookies. You could also let them each decorate one round cake layer. Have a separate cake for the birthday child, so the guests can share the cakes they decorated with their own families.

Community Service Party

Some children prefer to forego birthday presents in favor of having food donated to the local humane society or toys donated to a domestic violence shelter. Having been blessed with abundance, they would rather share their resources with the less fortunate. Use the slumber party time to craft greeting cards for the VFW, soldiers at war or the elderly. For kids who enjoy crafting, a slumber party allows plenty of time for doing their best work, and sharing art together gives kids the opportunity to talk with each other and confines the mess in one place. When they've had enough of sitting still, take them all for a walk to the nearest park. They can play on the toys and also carry on the community service theme, cleaning up wrappers, cans and other rubbish.

Be a Star Party

Have digital cameras and video cameras handy, with plenty of dress-up accessories like hats, feather boas, wild clip-on earrings, sunglasses and purses. Kids can create their own film or just record a bunch of funny scenes. Let parents know what the order of activities is and screen all the films they produce, especially if they plan to upload them to YouTube or their blog. If some parents don't want their children in pictures, be respectful of that and give them the title "Director of Photography," which comes with full control over the lighting and camera angles. At the end of the party, kids can host a film festival, showing off their performances for their parents.
