Craft Gifts To Create The Red-colored Hat Society

The Red Hat Society is a women's society all about life, love, laughter and friendship. Gifts to give for Red Hat Society members celebrate these things and are a nice way to say "Thank you" or "Welcome," or to give for a special occasion. Use red, purple, and lots of flair in your Red Hat craft gifts.

Photo Frames

Frame a photo of all your favorite Red Hatters with a homemade, personalized and Red-Hatted picture frame. The basic material is a cardboard or wooden plain frame, available at any craft store or even at dollar stores. Find some red and purple-printed scrapbooking papers and some decoupage glue, and decoupage strips of different papers onto the frame, or use all one paper. Let the glue dry. You can add red letter stickers along one side to spell out "Red Hat Society" or a special date or occasion, or you can glue on craft or scrapbooking flowers and feathers in red and purple to the corners and edges. For a thoroughly "Red Hat" frame, you can find little wooden doll hats, spray-paint them red, and tie little purple ribbons around them, then glue those onto the frame as well.

Red Hat Books

Use scrapbooking supplies to make special miniature journals for your RHS friends. You can get small plain-covered spiral or hard-bound notebooks at any craft store, dollar store or department store. Use shellac or decoupage glue to make a collage of inspiring and beautiful red and purple things. You may want to invest in a pack of red hat stickers to give these journals a common element, if you are making a whole bunch of them. Cut out red and purple flowers, pictures of hats, dresses, shoes and bags from magazines or catalogs, and add pieces of red and purple printed scrapbooking paper to fill in blank spots. Use photos of friends and family, or print out some red hat clip art; see the Resources section for some clip art. Scan magazines for things that say "Red Hat Society" to you, such as pretty ornaments, fun travel locations, activities like quilting or knitting, or indulgences like candies and spa products. Write a special message to the recipient on the inside of the cover, or a quote you like that sums up the RHS ethos.

Flower Wreaths

Flower wreaths that can hang on doors or walls are a great Red Hat Society gift idea you can craft at home. You will need a wreath base, such as a plain grapevine or straw wreath. These can be found at dollar and craft stores, or keep an eye out at yard sales. You will also need green floral tape, hot glue, and heavy-duty craft scissors or wire cutters, and your choice of silk flowers. (To cut costs, look at dollar stores or discount department stores for inexpensive artificial flowers.) You can make an entirely red-flowered wreath, or a wreath in shades of purple and lavender, or a combination of red and purple that you like. To add the flowers to the wreath, cut their stems shorter--about 4 to 6 inches, depending on the size of the wreath. You can wrap the stems with floral tape if you want to. Stick the stems in the wreath; if they have bendable wire stems you can twist them around some of the strands of the wreath, or if they don't, tuck the ends of the stems in among the strands on the back of the wreath. Do this all the way around the wreath until you have the look you want. Use a long twist tie to wrap around the point in the wreath you would like to hang it from, and twist it into a loop to hang. Now it's time to add fun accents if you want. You might add red or purple feathers, wooden craft hearts, sparkly red or purple star garland, ribbons, butterflies or---of course---red hats. You can make some yourself by cutting a hat shape from red felt and hot gluing on a purple feather, ribbon or bead.
