Hand fans, designed to cool humans, have taken many forms over their more than 3,000 years of existence that started in Mediterranean and Asian cultures. Chinese culture went so far as to "associate the fan with ancient mythical and historical characters," according to The Fan Museum. Crocheted fans have versatile uses including earrings and necklaces, bookmarks, coasters and wall and table art. Crafters make fans using basic crochet stitches like single and half double crochet and chaining. Crocheting fans provides a change of pace from crocheting the normal square, rectangle or circle.
Instructions
Row One
1. Make a slip knot with yarn.
2. Put the crochet hook into the slip knot. Pull the yarn to tighten the knot on the crochet hook.
3. Chain four.
4. Double crochet seven times in the first chain, or the fourth chain from the crochet hook. Turn.
Row Two
5. Chain three.
6. Half double crochet in the next stitch.
7. Chain one.
8. Alternate half double crochet and chaining one until the end of the row.
9. Finish the row with a half double crochet in the last stitch. Turn.
Row Three
10. Chain four.
11. Half double crochet in the next stitch.
12. Chain two.
13. Alternate half double crochet and chaining two until the end of the row.
14. Half double crochet in the last stitch. Turn.
Row Four
15. Chain five.
16. Half double crochet in the next stitch.
17.Chain three.
18. Alternate half double crochet and chaining three until the end of the row.
19. Half double crochet in the last stitch. Turn.
Row Five
20. Chain one.
21. Single crochet five times in the chain loop.
22. Slip stitch in the next stitch, the half double crochet from the previous row.
23. Single crochet six times in the next chain loop.
24. Alternate slip stitching in the half double crochet stitch, and six single crochets in the chain loop, until the end of the row.
Finishing
25. Cut a 4-inch piece of yarn with scissors.

Loop the yarn back through the last stitch. Wrap the yarn through itself. Pull the yarn to tighten the knot.

Weave the end of the yarn through the fan and cut off the excess yarn with scissors.

Weave the end of yarn from the beginning slip knot into the fan and cut the excess yarn with scissors.

Dampen the fan with water.

Stretch the fan out while pinning the fan to a cork board. Let the fan dry. This step makes the fan uniform and flat.
