Simple Promenade Ideas

Prom pictures can capture the magic of the evening.

Junior and senior proms are the pinnacle events of the high school experience. This formal dance marks one of the last functions that the graduating class will attend together and sometimes precedes a bittersweet goodbye for high school sweethearts. Due to this significance, a prom theme must a special and romantic night to remember yet simple enough for a student committee to create.

Roaring Twenties

The freedom and fun of the Jazz Age is an appropriate match for the independence and excitement of the prom. Although high school students are not of legal drinking age, the romanticism of the prohibition era is a time travel opportunity for juniors and seniors even without alcohol. Use a catchy tagline, such as "It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing," to place more focus on the fun of the era than on the political happenings. Recreate a speakeasy atmosphere with a peephole at the entrance to the venue. Include a simple pass phrase on prom invitations that each guest must say to gain entrance. Decorate the inside the room to look like a 1920s-era nightclub with dim lighting, white tablecloths and fishbowl centerpieces. The photo area should include a hand-painted cityscape, such as Chicago or New York, on a black cloth backdrop, and simple cardboard dancing silhouettes can add depth to the background. Members of the high school band can be the performing jazz band of the night as a fitting musical addition to the dance.

Masquerade

The masquerade ball was a common theme for formal events in the 18th century, and you can bring the mystery and fun of this theme to the prom. Decorate the dance hall with purple, silver and black balloons and shimmery streamers to create an elegant appeal. Sheer draperies hung from the ceiling are a simple way to add texture and fantasy to an open area. Top the pillars on the photo stage with a larger-than-life mask in colors to match the other colors present in the room. Ostrich feather table centerpieces are easy to make, attractive and coordinate with the feathers common on masquerade masks. Provide each guest with a mask as they arrive so they can enter the prom in mystery.

Old Hollywood

The Hollywood of the 1930s and 1940s was a fashionable and romantic era. Decorate the prom venue with silver and gold stars hanging from the ceiling. Overhead spotlights on a red-carpeted entrance will add to the glitz and glamour of this show business theme. Include simple props such as an old-style movie camera and reels of film in the photo backdrop area. Spray paint film rolls silver, and use them as streamers from the rafters and on the tables. Create a large wood frame to fill with plaster so each prom-goer can leave her hand prints and signature as a simple, lasting keepsake for the school.
