Steps To Make Party Hats For Kids

Customize your party hats to suit the theme of your party.

Party hats are among those party accessories that do not have to be store-bought. Card stock, tape and scissors can create the base for various designs. Choose the colors to match your party decor. You can then add stickers, ribbons, feathers or crepe paper as embellishments. Making hats can be part of the party festivities, or make the base before the party and invite the guests to add extras to customize their individual party hats.

Instructions

Cone-Shaped Party Hat

1. Cut a semicircle from a sheet of card stock. A 23-inch straight edge makes a basic cone hat. Make it larger or smaller depending on the finished size you need.

2. Roll the semicircle into a cone. Hold in place with a piece of tape. You can use double-sided tape, a few pieces of scotch tape or a line of masking tape.

3. Add streamers to the center of the cone shape. Cut crepe paper, ribbons or strips of colored paper, and poke one end through the hole in the top. Secure inside the hat with a piece of tape.

4. Make a braid to go along the bottom edge with three pieces of colored paper or crepe paper. Use double-sided tape to attach the completed braid.

5. Create pompoms from tissue or crepe paper. Cut three 8-inch circles. Pinch the center of each one and twist. Crumble the edges to make a ball shape. You can add three pompoms in a row down the side of the party hat, or attach one to the top of the hat and two down the side.

Party Boater Hat

6. Cut out a 10-inch circle from card stock. Draw another circle inside the first one that measures 8 inches in diameter; do not cut this out.

7. Cut darts from the outside of the 10-inch circle to end at the edge of the 8-inch circle. These lines can be cut straight in every inch. Bend the darts inward as you go around the circle.

8. Measure and cut a strip of the same color card stock 3 inches wide by 23 1/2 inches long. Draw a line straight down the center. Cut darts on one side of the strip to this center line.

9. Place the piece of paper cut in a circle shape upside down on the table with the darts facing up. Tape the strip around the circle, using the darts from the circle to hold it in place. This will form the top of the boater hat. Set flat on the table, pressing the outer darts of the strip of paper outward.

10. Measure and cut out a circle that is at least 13 inches in diameter. Measure an 8-inch inner circle and cut this center portion out.

11. Place this card-stock ring over the top of the boater. Flip over and tape the darts from the paper ring to the bottom of the rim of the hat.

12. Create a colorful band from patterned paper or a piece of wide ribbon. Secure at both ends with a piece of tape. Add a colorful feather or other embellishments as desired.

Crown Party Hats

13. Cut a 6-inch-wide strip from card stock. It should be approximately 22 inches long.

14. Draw a crown design on the back of the paper. This is typically a series of triangles.

15. Place a strip of double-sided tape along one side. Run another strip of double-sided tape down the center of the band. Join the ends together to create a crown-shaped band.

16. Cut a circle from tissue paper larger than the crown, approximately 12 inches in diameter. Put it inside the crown, attaching it to the double-sided tape inside. Billow out the center of the tissue paper to make it look like a royal crown.

17.Cut small shapes from different colors of card stock and stick these on the outside of the crown. Add larger jewel shapes to the tips of the triangles.
