Animal Costume Ideas

Dress up as your favorite animal this Halloween.

There are endless possibilities for animal Halloween costumes. Choose from strange animals, such as an anteater, or a more common animal, such as a domestic dog. You can buy animal costumes or make them with a variety of materials for the tails, ears, fur, fins or teeth.

Cats

Dress up as a lion for Halloween.

Choose from a variety of cats for your Halloween costume. Dressing up as a cat requires more than wearing a pair of ears and sticking a tail to the back of your pants. Sport the exotic spots of a leopard, cheetah or jaguar by sewing a costume from animal-printed fabric. Sew a tiger costume if you want to wear stripes. Male lions have distinctive manes, which help differentiate them from their female counterparts. Sport a mane made from faux animal fur that fits around your head. Dress in all black to get the sleek look of a black panther.

Birds

Dress up as a tropical toucan.

Choose from thousands of species of birds for a Halloween costume. An exotic display of feathers provides the signature look of a peacock. Blue leotards paired with a feather tail will look stunning. Turn heads with colorful tropical bird costumes, such as toucans. Wear a a long orange beak, black tights and a colorful leotard to complete the costume. Dress up as a cardinal by wearing a red costume with a beak.

Farm Animals

Chicken costumes are adorable on toddlers.

A visit to a local farm can provide you with a variety of ideas for costumes. Cow and horse costumes can be designed for two people. One person wears the head and the other person wears the back end of the costume. Pigs are farm animal favorites. Wear a snout, a puffy pink costume and a coiled tail. Bunny costumes can also be worn by putting on bunny ears and a cotton tail.

Marine Life

The ocean provides a multitude of costume ideas. Dress as a ferocious shark. Choose from great whites, lemons, tigers, nurses or a variety of other species. Wear fins and large fake teeth, which are the signature characteristics of sharks. Add some extra fluff and spikes to your fish costume if you want to dress up as a blowfish. Dress in red, add some claws and put on a pair of antennas to dress up as a crab or lobster. Wear green pants, a green long-sleeve shirt and design a shell out of cardboard for a green sea turtle Halloween costume.
