Making a baton with your children is a craft project that can keep them entertained and give them a homemade toy to use at holiday parades and festivities. Crafting batons gives you and your child a chance to explore your creativity and gives you an opportunity to engage in a family activity together.
Instructions
1. Cut a thin, empty wrapping paper roll to a baton size that your child can manage. Hold the end of the roll at your child's fingertips and mark where the roll meets his elbow for a good length.
2. Cover the cardboard tube with colored construction paper. Make a solid color baton if you wish or cut strips of different colored construction paper about 1 inch wide. Glue or tape the strips of paper to the tube.
3. Decorate the baton with stickers and markers. Add other embellishments, such as buttons, glitter, rhinestones or scrap pieces of cloth if desired.
4. Cut lengths of curling ribbon between 2 inches and 5 inches long. Spread a thin line of glue just inside the end of the tube and attach sections of ribbon, alternating colors and ribbon lengths to give the baton some added flair. Use scissors to curl the ribbon for added bounce or leave it straight to suit your child's preference.
