Ocean Costume Ideas

For an ocean-themed Halloween celebration, sea costumes can be a fun and easy solution. By following a few simple tricks, you can create sea costumes for your kids that will make them the envy of the ocean, or the party.

Mermaids

Little girls just love to be mermaids. Try these ideas for a mermaid costume of your own.

Use shiny fabrics in green, turquoise, or purple shades. Wrap a long stretch of fabric around her legs for the skirt; make sure it is stretchy enough for her to walk, or cut a slit in it. You can add fins to the bottom using more fabric or fun foam.

Use fun foam to cut out a seashell bra. She can wear this alone or over a tank top. Add a long flowing wig and seashell barrettes to her hair. Give her glittery eyes and cheeks so she will sparkle like the sea.

Lots of Legs

Jellyfish and Octopi can make fun costumes as well. To make all those legs, try springy, lightweight materials. You can use feather boas, or strips of fabric, attached at the child's waist like a belt. Let them hang down to add extra appendages. For the body of the jellyfish or octopus, cut a large shape (half-circle for jellyfish, light-bulb shape for octopus) out of cardboard or fun foam.

For your color scheme, jellyfish are transparent; so use a light white paint with some silver added in, and throw in a little pink for his tentacles. For your octopus, try a fun color like purple or bright green. You can cut circles out of fun foam to add suckers to his legs, and paint large eyes on his body for a goofy effect.

Attach the body to the child by hanging it around his neck with ribbon or yarn. Put him in a matching sweatsuit underneath the costume.

Fishy Parts

Fish costumes need a few basic parts: scales, fins, and tails. Make all of these out of fun foam for colorful and easy options. Cut fin shapes out and tie them to the arms or back of the child. You can cut out several scales and glue them to a cardboard breastplate, then tie it around her neck in front and in the back (she can wear it like a sandwich board). The tail can stick out of her own tail area, or be glued onto the costume as well.

Try adding glitter glue accents to your fishy body parts to make her sparkle and shine like the real thing.
