Cat Costume Ideas

Little Girl in Cat Costume

Cat costumes are always staples of Halloween and other costume parties. But deciding how to wear the costume can sometimes come as a challenge. Luckily, there are many ways you can step out as a cat and you can make them as unusual as you like. Whether you can sew or not, you'll be able to make a perfect cat costume in a matter of hours.

Tuxedo Cat

We all know those cats who look like they're wearing a tuxedo. To be one for your costume party, find some black pants and a black blazer. Wear a white shirt underneath. Purchase white gloves at a costume store or thrift store and wear black dress shoes. You can finish off your look by painting a nose and whiskers onto your face, stapling a black boa or scarf (cut in half) to the bottom area of the pants for a tail and wearing cat ears from a costume store.

Cat in the Hat

Not only can you buy a "Cat in the Hat" costume at most costume stores, but you can also make one yourself. The website "Coolest Homemade Costumes" has a great section of user-submitted ideas on making a "Cat in the Hat" costume, most of them for under $20, including pictures of the finished product. See the Resources section for the link.

Little Girl Cat Costumes

One traditional way for a little girl to be a cat is to turn her black (or white) dance leotard into a cat costume. Staple or sew a boa or scarf (cut in half) to the rear end of the leotard. Purchase a pair of tights the same color as the leotard and have her wear her white (or black) shoes. Buy a pair of cat ears and paint whiskers on her face and a nose.

As an alternative to a leotard, your little girl can wear an all-black or all-white outfit (depending on the type of cat she wants to be) with a tail attached to the rear end. She can choose a turtle neck, black pants or a regular t-shirt. It doesn't matter, as the ears, whiskers and nose will make her recognizable as the cat.

Sexy Cat Costumes

If you're going to an adult party and you want to look sexy and glam, being a fierce cat is the way to go. Purchase a bustier and a short skirt (black or white, but can be any color) and pair with fish-net or thigh-high stockings. Put on your favorite pair of high heels. Add some cat ears and whiskers and a feather boa or scarf to your rear end for a tail. To top off the look, add cuff links and a bow tie.

Shop for One

Almost any costume store or children's store will start selling cat costumes in August or September. Usually, they carry many creative styles from sexy versions for adults to cat costumes for babies. They'll likely even carry costumes for your cat, if he'll cooperate long enough to allow you to put clothing on him. Visit costumecraze.com to start brainstorming ideas or order a cat costume for a party.
