three dimensional Snowflake Craft

Decorate your home or Christmas tree with homemade 3D snowflakes.

Regardless of your artistic ability, as long as you possess an ounce of imagination and have a couple of hours to spare, you can create seasonal 3D snowflakes. Fashion these snowflakes from a sundry of materials you may already have around your home. Display your completed projects around the house, hang them from your Christmas tree or give them as gifts your friends and family can treasure for years.

Cool Paper Snowflakes

Cut out 6-inch squares from craft paper. Draw a square on the paper, 1-inch from the outer edge. Repeat this by drawing two smaller squares, each 1-inch from the lines of the prior squares. Leaving two corners on opposite ends of each square intact, cut slits along the remaining lines. Fold the smallest square in the center and glue the opposite corners together. Fold the next square in the opposite direction and glue the corners together. Repeat with the remaining squares. Repeat this process with five more pieces of paper and glue the ends together to create a six-sided spiral snowflake.

Pine Cone Snowflakes

Use a lever bypass lopper, normally used to trim branches, to transform ordinary pine cones into 3D snowflakes. Cut the tops and bottoms off of several pine cones. The center piece forms a flower shape. Hot glue the back side of this "flower" to the back side of another center pine cone piece. Spray paint it in white and brush with glitter for a hardy 3D snowflake to hang from your tree.

Large Feather Boa Snowflakes

Use 9-inch Styrofoam balls to fashion colossal snowflakes to hang from your porch or outdoor Christmas tree. Hot glue one end of a feather boa to the ball and allow it to dry. Add glue to small sections of the boa as you wrap it around the ball. Once the entire boa is secure, insert a paper clip into the top of the 3D snowflake and tie a large ribbon to it.

Small Feather Snowflakes

Make smaller Styrofoam and feather snowflakes using a bag of individual feathers. Spray paint 3-inch balls in pale blue or iridescent white. Insert the quills of the small white feathers into the balls. Cover your entire tree in these small handcrafted snowflakes.

Cedar Branch Snowflakes

Cut several tips, ranging in length from 1 inch to 3 inches each, from cedar tree branches. Spray paint them white. Tie six of these tips together with fishing line or craft wire to form a multi-faceted snowflake. Dust with glitter and hang.
