Tea Party Birthday Suggestions For Women

Few things are sweeter than little girls in frilly dresses at a tea party. And tea parties (for adults, too) are becoming more and more fashionable. So a tea party birthday not only celebrates another year, but takes a step toward teaching little girls the social graces of a tea party. But not without some fun, too.

Set the Atmosphere

Typically, a tea party birthday will be a small gathering. Decorate the room with fresh flowers. Use doilies on the linen tablecloth. If the girls are older, consider setting the places with actual china, if possible. Whether you use china or paper plates, don't forget the place cards for that proper, formal tea atmosphere. Set out cookies and mini-cakes on silver platters for the guests. And depending on the children, you might have a tea party without actual tea, for a couple of reasons. Young girls may not like hot tea, which can scald, and little girls may spill from tea cups. So depending on the age group, consider a tea party with punch. But it can still be served in tea pots just for atmosphere. To complete a formal setting, play soft classical music in the background.

Dress Up

Tea parties are generally dress-up affairs. Let the dressing up be one of the party activities. It can be the first "game" the girls play as they arrive. In the front room, have a box of clothing the girls can put on over their own clothes. Have fancy dresses, big hats, opera gloves and maybe even feather boas. Let the girls add a touch of blush and some lipstick to complete their game of dress-up. Now they're ready for the party. As a variation, the girls can play the game together taking turns dressing each other up. Once they're all in high fashion, let them sashay around the room, showing off their new looks.

Doll Parade

Little girls especially love to play tea party with their dolls or stuffed animals. On the party invitation, invite each little girl to bring her favorite doll. Be certain to set enough places at the table to accommodate all the dolls. For the doll settings, plastic toy cups and saucers will be more suitable. Once all the guests have arrived, have a doll parade through the house and backyard. The hosting parents (and any other parents in attendance) will play the role of the crowd, cheering as the dolls parade past. Perhaps even throw some confetti and play parade music in the background.

Doll Pageant

As an alternative to a doll parade, have a doll beauty pageant. Using a rectangular roll of red felt, you can create a doll runway. The hosting mother can act as the emcee, introducing each doll before she takes the runway and asking the doll questions. Each little girl, of course, walks her doll down the runway and answers for her. Questions can be things like: What is your favorite thing to do? If you could go anywhere, where would you like to go? What is the best color and why? Make them questions a little girl can answer. Then, to crown a winner, the little girls will vote, but tell them to be fair: they cannot vote for their own doll, they must vote for someone else's. This will ensure you don't end up with a tie where each girl voted for her own doll.

Games and Crafts

Instead of one lump or two, how about an entire stack? For this game, you'll need a lot of sugar cubes. Give each girl a pile of cubes and start a timer. At the end of the timer, the girl with the tallest stack or tower of cubes wins. You might also make a game of setting the table. For this, have a secondary, smaller table divided into four sections. So only four players at a time. You'll need a box with plastic or paper supplies set off to the side. Start the girls and let each of them race to the box to get one item at a time. She takes her item back to her section of the table then races for the next item. The winner is the first girl to properly set her area. For an added challenge, you might have four different colored settings, requiring that each setting also be properly matched. Other party activities might include a few crafts, such as making tissue paper flowers, beading a necklace or bracelet, or even putting together a scrapbook page for the tea party. Because this is also a birthday party, traditional birthday party games could also be played, such as musical chairs or pin the tail on the donkey.
