Guitar picks weren't always made of plastic, and you couldn't always buy them by the gross. Guitar players used to have to make their own picks out of whatever materials they had. Eagle feathers, pig hooves and even oyster shells were common materials.
Instructions
Preparing Your Material
1. After selecting the material, inspect it for cracks, thin spots or any other defects that may affect how it is cut or shaped.
2. Cut your material into the basic shape of a pick with a rotary tool equipped with a cutting wheel. You can always cut more off of it, so cut a slightly larger shape than you think you need.
3. Refine and smooth the edges with an abrasive wheel so the basic form of the pick is more recognizable and there are no sharp or rough edges. Remember, a pick works best with smooth edges.
Finishing the Pick
4. Once you have a good shape, do a little thinning. Again using an abrasive wheel with the rotary tool, thin the pick evenly across its width, being careful not to cut too far into it. Most people enjoy a rounded surface on the pick, but you can experiment with what you prefer.
5. When your pick is the right thickness, sand it down with progressively higher grit paper until you are satisfied with how smooth it is.
6. The final step is to shape and hone the edges. Use a nail file to shape the edges according to your own playing style and preferences. Sand the edges down with the highest grit sandpaper you can find.
