Whether you are going to a costume party, getting ready for Halloween or acting on stage, costumes are a fun way to try out a new identity. You can find ideas for women's costumes just about anywhere. Get inspiration from history books, movies, stories and celebrities. With so many options, you are sure to find a costume that fits your personality.
Historical Costumes
You can use a famous historical woman as inspiration for your costume. Dress up as Cleopatra by putting on a long, white dress and tying a gold scarf around your waist. Put on gold bracelets and gold sandals. Wear a straight black-haired wig and a gold head band with jewels. Use black eyeliner and dark eye shadow to create the signature winged look around your eyes. Become a Southern bell by wearing a long dress with a wide skirt. Wear a crinoline or hoop skirt underneath your dress. Complete the outfit with white gloves and a wide brimmed hat or parasol.
Storybook Costumes
You can bring your favorite story to life by dressing up as one of the characters. For an "Alice in Wonderland" costume, wear a blue dress with puffy sleeves, a white ruffled pinafore or apron, white tights and black shoes. Put on a blond wig and wear a black head band. You can dress up as a Greek goddess by draping white fabric around yourself and pinning it in place to make a toga. Tie a gold cord around your waist and wear sandals. Arrange your hair on top of your head and use bobby pins to hold it in place. Wear a crown of fake ivy to complete the look.
Glamorous Costumes
Go for glamour and glitz by dressing up as a celebrity. You can be a pop rock star by wearing a tight, trendy outfit with lots of embellishment and sparkle. Wear a headset with a microphone or carry a microphone in your hand to finish the look. Become a red carpet actress by wearing a floor-length gown and a feather boa. Wear dramatic makeup and jewelry. You can also dress up as a specific celebrity like Cher, Madonna, Julia Roberts or Marilyn Monroe. Find a picture of the lady you want to dress up as and imitate her appearance.
Scary Costumes
What costume party would be complete without a few scary costumes? Wear a red dress, red horns and red or black shoes to become a she-devil. Carry a red trident to add to the effect. For a Gothic fairy, wear a black flowing dress, black wig, black shoes and black wings. If possible, rip the bottom of the dress so that it is ragged and uneven. Use makeup to make your skin look pale and add shadows around your eyes.
