Lifelike artificial flowers can substitute for the real thing when used in decorations or bouquets. On the plus side, artificial flowers never wilt, they don't cause allergies and you don't have to worry about water spilling onto your furniture if the vase gets knocked over. Quality artificial flowers may be as expensive as the real thing, but there's no comparison once you consider that florist creations end up in the trash after a week.

Care for silk flowers with a feather duster or use a special silk flower cleaner. Silk flowers should be tested before washing with water to make sure they are color fast as some fabrics will bleed when exposed to water.

Plastic artificial flowers do not always look perfectly lifelike when viewed up close. However, plastic flowers are more durable than fabric blooms and are good choice for outdoor use in wreaths or grave decorations. Well-crafted plastic flowers can be used in home displays that are not examined closely, such as the top of a bookcase or high shelf. Plastic flowers can be washed with soap and water.

Professionally made paper flowers are extremely lifelike.
Paper flowers crafted by a talented artist can be extremely lifelike. Paper flowers can be used in wedding bouquets, party decorations or even long-lasting floral arrangements. These flowers are similar to silk blooms but are more delicate and difficult to clean. They can only be dusted with a dry brush, such as a clean makeup brush.
