How You Can Carve A Peacock From A Watermelon

Carving a watermelon into a peacock makes a great centerpiece.

Making a peacock from a watermelon rind looks difficult, but requires more patience than skill. Use a template outline to draw the peacock design onto the watermelon, and cut around it to complete the peacock design. To simulate a peacock's tail, you can add fruit-filled bamboo skewers to the back of the watermelon. Use patience when making the design to avoid cracking the watermelon shell and ruining the design. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Wash the watermelon in the sink to remove all dirt. Dry with a towel. Place the watermelon on a flat cutting surface, such as a large cutting board. Cut off the bottom ½ inch of watermelon rind along the middle of the watermelon so that it sits flat on the board.

2. Cut out the peacock outline. A simple outline showing the bird's head and wings from the front is best. Tape it to the front of the watermelon along the edge that does not have the vine. Draw the outline of the design onto the watermelon with a marker, and remove the paper outline.

3. Cut around the edges of the outline with the small utility knife. Cut into the flesh about 1 inch. Use the large knife to cut across the top of the watermelon, connecting the 2 side edges of the design where the wing tips are. Cut deeply into the flesh, about 7 or 8 inches.

4. Use the small knife to cut the rind of the watermelon out from the cut line down to the outline. Work slowly so you don't damage the part of the rind that will stay on the watermelon. Remove the undesired rind, and discard.

5. Use an ice cream scoop to scoop out the flesh of the watermelon around the head and wings of the design.

6. Draw points onto the back end of the watermelon to represent the tail of the bird. Angle cuts from the front design to the back to open up the top of the watermelon, stopping short of where you want the tail to be. Cut out the rest of the top flesh of the watermelon.

7. Scoop out the remainder of the flesh with the ice cream scoop. You can leave some flesh inside the watermelon if desired. Cut fruit pieces, and skewer them onto bamboo skewers. Stick the ends of the skewers through the tail rind of the peacock. Fill the inside of the watermelon with more fruit pieces.
