Different Environments In Biomes

A biome is a large area of the earth that contains an ecosystem.

Biomes are sections of the earth where distinctive types of animal and plant life may be found. These animals and plants live in these areas because they have adapted to the various climates and other environmental features. Some of the different biomes in the world are tundra, taiga, temperate forest, tropical rainforest, desert, grasslands and ocean. Within each of these biomes is an ecosystem. An ecosystem is the way in which all the living and non-living things in a biome interact. So an ecosystem would include all animal and plant life within its biome.

Tundra

The tundra is a harsh environment for all living things.

The tundra is the biome that is located near to the polar areas. The plants and animals in this biome are fragile and rely on the environment found here. The ecosystem is made up of fungi, algae, rosettes, lichens, wolves, mountain goats and sheep, along with others that can withstand this harsh environment.

Taiga

The taiga encompasses coniferous forest. It is still a cold environment, but rain does fall here and accumulates in bogs, swamps and ponds. Coniferous, or trees with needles as their leaves, along with plants such as blueberries, are the predominant plant life. Animals would include moose, caribou, black bear and lynx, along with many birds including large predators like the bald eagle and the peregrine falcon.

Temperate Forests

The temperate forests are the parts of the world where there are mild winters, warm summers and ample rainfall. The ecosystem here include both evergreen and deciduous trees. Some of the plants are the American beech, guelder rose, lady fern, pecan, shagbark hickory, the white birch and the white oak. The animal life here is partly made up of the American bald eagle, black bear, coyote, duckbill platypus, chipmunk, squirrel and deer.

Tropical Rainforest

A rainforest receives 50 to 250 inches of rain per year. Because of the plentiful rain and the warm temperatures of 68 to 98 degrees Fahrenheit, the rainforest is an area of high humidity. The ecosystem consists of tall trees or plants that can thrive in their shade. Some examples are bamboo, coconut tree, jambu, kapok tree, mangrove forests, and bougainvillea. The animal life has a varied and rich diet. Some of the animals here are the African elephant, pit viper, Bengal tiger, toucan, bat, and sloth.

Desert

The desert biome consists of a small ecosystem with plants that grow close to the ground and animals that can burrow. Examples of the plants and animals found are cacti, yucca, creosote bush, Mojave aster, lizards, antelopes, desert toads, coyotes and desert bighorn sheep.

Grasslands

Grassland biomes are found on every continent except Antarctica. These areas.have too much rain for deserts but not enough for trees. The living beings in the ecosystems here include grasses, sunflowers, asters, blazing stars, coneflowers, clover, crickets, dung beetles, prairie chicken, coyotes, gray wolves, bobcats and eagles.

Ocean

The ocean biome covers 70 percent of the earth. The types of life and ecosystems found are vast. In the oceans may be found the smallest and the largest creatures known on earth. There are plants and animals that thrive in the areas of the ocean that receive sunlight as well as those that survive without any sunlight. Any plants or animals, such as seaweed, whales, dolphins, photoplankton, that survive in the ocean are part of the ecosystem found here.
