Steps To Make A Parrot Using Foam

Let your creativity run wild when choosing colors for your foam parrot.

Making a Styrofoam parrot is a fun craft project to share with your kids. You can assemble the parrot from a few simple craft materials and will not need specialized skills or a great deal of creativity to get great results. You'll need to cut the tail and wings out of craft foam, based on a template, so you will not be able to let kids perform this project unsupervised. If you wish, you can further decorate a basic foam parrot with colored feathers to transform it into a true work of art.

Instructions

1. Paint the Styrofoam egg and oval bright red with the craft paint and allow the paint to dry. The egg will be the body of the parrot and the oval will serve as its head.

2. Download and print templates for the parrot's wings and tail, or draw the templates freehand.

3. Trace the patterns from the templates on to different colored pieces of craft foam, then cut out the pieces for the wings and tail from the craft foam with the scissors.

4. Assemble the pieces of craft foam for the wings and tail and glue overlapping pieces of different colored foam to create the feathers. Use the templates as guides to create the wings and tail. Allow the glue to dry.

5. Cut a small, triangular wedge out of a piece of yellow craft foam to serve as the beak.

6. Cut two bird-feet shaped pieces out of the felt.

7. Glue the googly eyes and the wedge of craft foam to the oval Styrofoam ball in the appropriate locations for a parrot's head. The eyes should be evenly spaced on both sides of the ball. The wedge of foam serves as a beak, so place it a little lower than the eyes, but on a line directly between them to maintain a symmetrical appearance.

8. Cut the bottom off the Styrofoam egg so it sits flat on a table.

9. Glue the felt feet to the bottom of the Styrofoam egg.

10. Glue the assembled wings and tail to the Styrofoam egg to create the parrot's body.

11. Attach the parrot's head to the top of the Styrofoam egg using toothpicks or wooden dowels to affix the Styrofoam egg to the Styrofoam ball.
