Ancient Civilization Crafts

Create paper replicas of the Temple of Saturn and other Roman gods.

Create crafts based on items used by ancient civilizations as well as the art of the time period. Make such crafts as part of a project for school, art show, theatrical production or as part of a history lesson for children. Provide facts about the civilization that inspired your craft, if desired.

Greek Crafts

Craft ideas concerning ancient Greece include using paper towel rolls to create figures of assorted Greek gods and other mythological creatures. Ideas include making a toilet paper roll of Medusa, the monster with snakes for hair, by drawing and cutting out a snake-covered head and appendages and gluing them to the toilet paper roll body. Other ideas include painting paper plates black, then decorating them with Greek-style images using reddish-orange paints to create ancient Greek pottery crafts. You can also use card stock to make paper dolls of the entire Greek pantheon.

Roman Crafts

Craft ideas based on ancient Rome include using white bedsheets and safety pins to construct togas, and making paper versions of the gold leaf crown Julius Caesar and other Roman leaders wore. Color and cut out Roman god figures out of card stock to make bookmarks -- ideas include Venus, the goddess of love, and Mercury, the winged messenger god. Other ideas include crafting wooden or cardboard swords to mimic those the Roman gladiators used. As Jesus was born during Roman times, paper or polymer clay Nativity scenes are another craft option.

Egyptian Crafts

Ancient Egyptian craft ideas can include constructing edible pyramids out of square foodstuffs such as sugar cubes and square cheese blocks. Wrap white strips of cloth around dolls of assorted sizes to create mummies, or create dioramas using paper pyramids, sand and camel figures. Other ideas include drawing symbols and images based on Egyptian hieroglyphic pictures on card stock for use as bookmarks, or creating crocodiles out of toilet paper rolls. Draw crocodile heads and appendages on card stock and attach them to the toilet paper roll body.

Native American Crafts

Native American craft ideas include making dream catchers, either by purchasing dream catcher kits or using string and metal loops, such as large earrings, to construct homemade dream catchers. Tie feathers to additional pieces of string to tie along the bottom of the craft. Other ideas include making Native American headdresses out of foam feather cutouts and cloth headbands, or using arrowheads, beads and leather strips to make arrowhead necklaces. Create dance fans by researching Native American designs and patterns, then use construction paper, craft sticks, paints and feathers to make the fans.
