Lariat Rope Crafts

Cowboy crafts have risen in popularity and are a wonderful way to add a rustic ranch look to a home's decor. Incorporating everyday items from a cowboy's life is a very authentic way of crafting. Retired lariat ropes are a great item, whether you want to use the whole rope or just a bit. Make a thoughtful lariat rope craft as a special and personal gift for the cowboy in your life.

Lariat Rope Wreath

Coil the lariat rope into a wreath shape approximately 18 inches in diameter. Tie strips of leather cording in a knot around the coils, every four or five inches, to hold the coils together. Hot glue or wire dried flowers and pheasant feathers to the right, bottom, side of the lariat rope wreath. Add a bow made from leather strips and randomly place silver conchos into the arrangement. If the cowboy has won special belt buckles or has retired leather work gloves, include them in the lariat rope wreath.

Lariat Rope Room Wall Border

A lariat rope wall border looks very sophisticated in a living room or child's cowboy bedroom. Attach lariat rope to the top eight inches of a room's wall and continue around the room at the top of the walls. Twist the rope into loops and tack in place as you attach it around the entire perimeter of the room. Tack silver conchos, or bottle caps you have flattened with a hammer, randomly over the lariat rope. If your lariat rope is well used and flexible, twist it into cowboy words or a child's name and tack within the loops of the border.

Lariat Rope Basket

Making a lariat rope basket requires the use of a soldering iron and is not for the faint of heart. Use extreme caution when attempting this craft, as the soldering iron gets very hot. Begin coiling the lariat rope a few inches from the end with the hondo, which is the small loop on one end of the lariat. Melt the rope together with the soldering iron, to attach the coils. Melt the rope every inch or two. The soldering marks will show, so try to be consistent so they create a design. You will begin your coil from the bottom of the basket and continue to coil up the sides. Leave enough of an excess on the end of the lariat rope to thread the tassel through the hondo, to finish.
