Making fun paper crafts is a good way to bond with children.
Paper is a versatile material that can be used in making many crafts. These crafts can be for personal use or can be given as thoughtful gifts to loved ones during holidays or special occasions. Doing these crafts with kids is also a nice way of teaching them craft-making skills and at the same time promotes quality bonding time together.
Magazine Mosaic
A mosaic is a picture made up of small tiles. A kid-friendly version using paper would be to substitute magazine cut-outs for tiles, gluing the paper bits on a paper plate. Find inspiration from other mosaic designs or from photos and decide on your mosaic design. Draw the design using pencil on the back of a paper plate. Cut out 3/8-inch squares from old magazine pages using colors needed for your design. If you chose a design of a flower, for instance, cut squares of the colors you would like your flowers to have. The squares do not need to be perfect. In fact, irregularities will add character and a sense of authenticity to your mosaic. You should also cut small triangles to fit in corners as needed. Glue the squares on the paper plate in accordance to the design. Mix white glue and water in equal parts and seal the finished picture by brushing a thin coat of the mixture on it. Let it dry, then hang the mosaic on a wall as decor.
Switch Plate Paper Wrapper
You can decorate your switch plates with any decorative paper you want to make it look fancy and colorful. If it is a little kid's room, you can find paper with images of the child's favorite cartoons. Sand the switch plate to make it ready for the paper. Measure the switch plate and cut a piece of decorative paper, such as wrapping paper or a magazine page, according to the measurement. Cut a tiny rectangular hole where the switch can pass through. Cut small snips at each of the four corners of the paper. Coat the switch plate with Mod Podge, which is an all-purpose adhesive coat and sealer. Put the paper over the switch and press down. Overlap the snipped corners and smooth them into place. Coat the switch plate with another layer of Mod Podge to seal it.
Hand Print Turkey
This paper craft is ideal for Thanksgiving or fall. Put your hand on a piece of white paper and trace with a pencil. Draw a small triangle on the side where your thumb is to make the turkey's beak. Draw a thin oval shape at the base of the triangle to make the turkey's wattle. Draw a tiny circle inside your thumb area to create an eye and add two legs at the bottom of the hand to make the turkey's legs. Draw a few curved lines to represent the feathers inside the middle of the hand. Color or paint the turkey using brown for the body, red for the wattle, orange for the beak and legs and black for the eyes. If you're planning to frame to picture or give it as a card, you can add the following poem: "This isn't just a turkey as you can plainly see, I made it with my hand which is a part of me. It comes with lots of love especially to say, I hope you have a very Happy Thanksgiving Day."
Paper Canoe
Make a canoe much like an Indian's birch bark canoe using a brown paper bag. Get a medium-sized brown paper bag and cut it in half. Discard the upper half of the bag. Cut off some more inches from the top part of the bag to make it only around 4 inches in length. Cut off the two corners from the bottom of the paper bag to make a curve. Now the paper bag is shaped like a canoe. Using a hole punch, punch a few holes to line each side of the canoe. Four holes on each side will do. Weave around the holes using red yarn and tie at the end.
