Use a variety of plastic insects when planning a bug-themed party.
The array of colorful insects often peaks the interest of many boys and girls. If your child is a fan of creepy crawlers, you should consider throwing him an insect-themed birthday party. From bug-eyed invitations to friendly butterfly games, prepare a memorable insect party the guests will be talking about for weeks. Give the party guests bug-themed stickers, candy and toys as game prizes and party favors.
Invitations
Fold green card stock in half and cut the card into a leaf shape. Place bug stickers on the front of the invitation and use markers to create "bug tracks" all over the card. Write the party details on the inside of the card. Or, print large pictures of bugs and write the party details on the back of the picture. For added decoration, place two or three plastic bugs inside the envelope when mailing the invitation. Bug-themed party invitations are also available online and at many party supply stores.
Activities
Place markers, crayons and bug-themed coloring books on a table. As the children arrive, they can color bug pictures while waiting on the other party guests to arrive. For another arrival activity, have the children make bug hats. They can use craft pompoms, chenille stems, feathers, beads, markers, bug stickers and large googly eyes to decorate the hats. Tell the children to make up their own bug name and write it on the hat. Make this activity a contest by awarding prizes to the funniest, silliest, scariest and most creative bug names.
Decorations
Decorate the party area with plush and plastic bugs. Hang a fake spider web from the ceiling and on the walls to stick bugs on. Sprinkle plastic ants on the food table and hang giant bugs from the ceiling. Use large toy bugs as balloon centerpieces for the party tables. Print pictures of different types of bugs to hang on the walls. Use sidewalk chalk to draw bugs on the walkway leading to the party. Bug-themed party decorations are available online and at many party supply stores.
Games
Put a twist on classic games by incorporating the bug party theme. For example, play a game of "Buzz Buzz Sting" instead of "Duck Duck Goose" or "Pin the Insect on the Flower" instead of "Pin the Tail on the Donkey." Another idea is to fill a clear jar with plastic bugs and have the children guess how many bugs are in the jar. The child who guesses closest to the correct number wins a prize. For a bug memory game, fill another glass jar with a variety of insects like ants, spiders and ladybugs. Have the children sit in a circle and pass the jar around at least three times. Tell the children to look at the insects carefully. Take the jar out of room and have the children name the types of insects in the jar. Each player who answers correctly earns a small prize.
