Winter Candle Focal point Ideas

Light your boring dining table this winter with easy to make candle centerpieces. Create cozy candlelight for an elegant winter dinner, or a more laid-back and novel centerpiece for everyday family dining. By using a few craft supplies, you can easily transform unused or found items quickly with ideas that are easy on the pocketbook. Make several to change out during the season or to sell at a fall craft bazaar.

Snowman Hurricane Lamp

The base of this lamp is constructed using a 12-inch clay flowerpot saucer and a clear glass hurricane chimney, at least 12 inches tall. Paint the saucer using white acrylic paint. Repeat with additional coats for complete coverage. Sponge paint the outer surface of the chimney with white acrylic paint. To allow the light to shine through, this does not need to be a heavy coat. Allow the paint to dry. Measure down 5 inches from the top of the chimney and mark. Paint above the mark with black paint for the snowman hat.

Stand the chimney on black craft foam, leaving 2 inches extended on all sides. Draw around the chimney. Cut out the inner circle and the outer circle to create the hat brim. Slide the brim over the chimney top and down to the bottom of the black paint. Glue the brim in place with craft glue. Dip the eraser end of a new pencil in black paint. Dot two eyes and space seven dots for a smile. Use orange dimensional fabric paint to draw a long sideways triangle for the carrot nose. Place a pillar candle in the center of the dish and cover it with the chimney. Add bits of pine branches and pine cones to the dish.

Yule Log

Cut a fireplace log to about 18 inches long. Run the log through a table saw, taking off 1 inch from one side. This will create a flat bottom so that your Yule log will not roll. Place the log on its flat cut bottom. Wrap pine garland around the sides of the log and staple gun it into place. Use wire cutters to cut away the excess. Use a 5/8-inch drill bit to space three to five 1-inch deep holes along the top length of the Yule log. Insert long Christmas colored taper candles into each drilled hole. Apply glue to the back of miniature Christmas floral picks and insert them into the pine branches, spacing them evenly.

Snowman Cupcake Candle Pan

Spray paint a six cup cupcake pan royal blue. Dip a toothbrush into white acrylic paint. With the bristles pointing down, rub a wood skewer on them to spatter the blue painted pan. Set a tea light candle into each cup. Melt paraffin wax in a double boiler. When the wax has completely melted, allow it to cool until it has a skim coated top. Use a secondhand electric mixer to beat the wax, creating a white frothy snow. Use a spatula to scoop the snowy wax into each cupcake cup, over each tea light, leaving the wick exposed. With the wick for the nose, press two black beads into the wax for eyes and five for a smile. When the wax has hardened, lightly dab pink paint on the cheeks. The flame of the candle will produce the color for the nose.
