Unique Homemade Halloween Adornments

These decorations go beyond the basic jack-o-lantern.

Halloween decorations are an absolute must for any festive home. Whether you are going for a spooky, whimsical or elegant look, it is easy to create decorations that fit your tastes. Store-bought decorations can be expensive, especially when you consider they are only used once a year. Homemade decorations can suit a wide range of styles and are friendly on your budget even if they take a bit more creativity.

Customized Gravestones

If you are going for a spooky Halloween look, make your own gravestones for the front yard or porch. Use cardboard covered in black paper and simply write the names of the dead with white oil pencils, wrap cardboard in foil and write names or messages in black marker or you can use pieces of hard foam and cut them to the desired shape using a knife. Spray the foam with black or gray spray paint and glue paper letters or sticker letters to the front. The great thing about making your own gravestones is you can make up your own names to label them with -- use family names or funny messages that your trick-or-treaters and neighbors will enjoy reading.

Glitter Pumpkins

Pumpkins are a traditional Halloween decoration but you can put a twist on tradition by creating glitter pumpkins. Use a paint brush to cover sections of the pumpkin at a time in glue then sprinkle on fine glitter in the color of your choice. Work in sections so the glue doesn't dry before you get all the way around the pumpkin. Shake off excess glitter and allow the glue and glitter to dry. You can use any color of pumpkin and glitter to match your home decor.

Creepy Creatures in Jars

Transform your dining room table into a creepy science lab by putting a few slithery and stuffed creatures into jars that are made to look like science experiments. Remove the labels from various sizes of clear glass jars and use the lids as bases to hold down the specimens. Use a stuffed crow, big plastic spiders, a snake or anything else that might incite cringes. Glue the specimens to the inside of the lid jars. Place the jar over the specimen and twist it into place on the lid. For an added touch, label your specimens.

Feathered Wreath

A feathered wreath will give your home a whimsical and even elegant look for Halloween, especially when you use black feathers. To create a feather wreath you need a foam wreath form, black feather boas and pins. Wrap the feather boa around the wreath form, ensuring that the form does not show. Secure the boa in place with pins. You will need several boas to cover a form depending on what size of form you choose. Add plastic spiders or a stuffed crow to your wreath for a spooky look. Hang the wreath on your front door or mantel.
