How To Look After An Inside Chinese Fan Palm

Fan palm fronds resemble a fully opened fan.

Chinese fan palms grow a single tall trunk topped with drooping, frond-like leaves. The full foliage makes the fan palm an attractive indoor plant in areas where a large houseplant is desired. At maturity, the Chinese fan palm can reach 30 feet or more in height, but the confines of the container and the lower light levels indoors prevent the tree from reaching more than 6 feet tall in most cases. With the proper cultural care, a fan palm can provide indoor greenery for many years.

Instructions

1. Set the fan palm in an area that receives bright, indirect sunlight. An area 4 or 5 feet from a brightly lit east or south window provides sufficient light.

2. Maintain the temperature in the room between 65 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid areas near drafty windows or doors, or by air and heat vents that may dry out the plant.

3. Water the fan palm when the soil surface begins to dry but before it dries out completely. Water at the base of the plant until the excess moisture begins to drain out the bottom of the pot, which ensures the moisture penetrates to the entire root zone. Empty the drip tray after each watering.

4. Fertilize every three months with a palm-formulated fertilizer. Apply at the rate recommended on the package for the size of your palm. Overfertilization can damage the palm or lead to quick growth, which are both undesirable.

5. Inspect the underside of the leaves once monthly for mites, aphids and other insect pests. Treat infected palms with an insecticidal soap or pesticide, following package directions.
