How You Can Train A Yellowheaded Amazon . com Parrot

The yellow-headed Amazon parrot (Amazona oratrix) is a short-tailed bird, measuring about 15 to 17 inches in length, with a distinctive yellow head and red patches on its wings. It has a stout hooked beak, used for grasping, climbing and cracking nuts and other seeds. These birds have charmed bird lovers with their beauty and ability to learn new tricks. Training a yellow-headed Amazon parrot can be rewarding but requires patience and commitment.

Instructions

1. Use one- or two-syllable words when teaching your parrot to talk. Repeat the words until you get some sort of response. Offer your yellow-headed Amazon parrot bribes such as treats or fruits to encourage him. Proceed by repeating the word or phrase until your parrot responds clearly.

2. Teach your yellow-headed Amazon parrot the step-up trick. Place the parrot on a branch. Gently push your index finger, as well as your middle finger, into its chest area while saying the words, "Step up." Repeat until you only need to say the words "Step up" without having to push the bird.

3. Let your yellow-headed Amazon parrot smell a piece of food. Slowly move the food around the parrot's body in a circular motion while saying the words, "Turn around." Once the parrot goes in a full circle, give her the food as a reward. Repeat until your yellow-headed Amazon parrot can turn around by command without the use of bribes.
