How You Can Sew Fairy Wings

You can copy the shape of a butterfly wing.

Design wings to suit any type of fairy costume. Make small pink wings with a scalloped edge for a rose fairy, sheer white wings with sharp points for a winter icicle fairy or tall black wings trimmed with "fur" for an evil fairy. You can make wings by stretching pantyhose onto a coat hanger frame, but coat hangers are hard to bend and the size of the hose limits the size of the wings. Sewing fabric onto 14-gauge wire allows you to make intricately shaped wings in many sizes.

Instructions

1. Measure 2 inches from the end of the wire and bend it at that point. Shape the wire into a flat fairy wing, bringing the wire back around to the first bend in the wire. Twist the wire together at that point. Do not cut the wire. Shape a mirror image of the first wing with the rest of the wire. When you reach the first wing again, cut the wire leaving a 2-inch tail. Wrap this tail around the wire of the other wing. You now have a wire frame for your wings.

2. Thread your machine and set it on a wide zigzag stitch with a stitch length of 8. Cut a piece of fabric large enough to cover one entire wing with an extra inch around all the edges. Lay the fabric over the wing and sew slowly over the wire frame, all around the wing, attaching the fabric to the frame. The needle should pierce the fabric on both sides of the frame.

3. Sew fabric onto the other wing in the same way. Trim any excess fabric. Fold a 4-inch-long piece of 2-inch twill tape over the center of the wings where the wire crosses, so that you have 2 inches of tape on each side. This band of tape can run horizontally or vertically. Choose what is best for the shape of your wings. Sew the tape together along all four sides. Sew slowly, and avoid hitting the wire with your needle. This will allow you to attach the wings to the costume or harness. If desired, sew on a small piece of fabric to cover the tape.

4. Paint the wings as desired. Decorate them with glitter. Add lengths of feather boa or other lightweight trim along the top edges.

5. Attach the wings to the back of the costume by sewing the twill tape to the fabric. If you cannot attach the wings to the costume, make a harness by cutting three 2-yard lengths of 1-inch twill tape and sewing the center of the tapes to the 2-inch twill tape. Wrap one piece of tape over you shoulder and tie it to a second piece of tape wrapped up under your arm on the other side. Do the same with a piece of tape over the other shoulder. Tie the remaining two pieces of tape together around your body, below the other tape.
