Craft Switch Flop Ideas

A plastic flower takes these sandals from drab to fab.

Dress up a pair of basic, plain-colored flip flop sandals with inexpensive and easily available craft supplies for school spirit, parties or the beach. Make a pair to match your favorite outfit, or create multiple pairs to mix and match. Give them as gifts, or use them as a party favors or a fun craft activity for a group.

Beads

Sew beads onto the straps of a basic pair of flip flops to dress them up. You can also use seashells to create a similar effect.

Feathers and Fur

Glue or sew fake fur or feathers onto plain flip flops. You can use individual feathers, which you can find a variety of at craft supply stores, or cut lengths of a feather or fuzzy boa and glue or sew them on.

Fabric Paint

Use permanent fabric paint or fabric markers to add your own designs to a pair of flip flops. The straps need to be fabric for this instead of plastic. The wider the straps, the better your designs will show. You can apply the paint with a paintbrush freehand or with stamps and stencils.

Craft Foam

Cut shapes like flowers and butterflies from craft foam, and glue them onto the top of your flip flops. Layer multiple colors of foam together to make your shapes more exciting and three-dimensional.

Ribbon

Tie lengths of multi-colored ribbon around the straps of a pair of plastic flip flops, leaving the ends sticking out, until the straps are hidden by ribbon pieces. A thicker, stiffer ribbon works best for this project.

Fabric

Cut or tear strips of fabric, and knot the strips around the sandal straps until you have covered them. The ends of the fabric should stick up in a fluffy way.

Flowers

Glue plastic or silk flowers to flip flops for an instant fashion statement. Use lots of smaller flowers or just one large one---it's up to you.
