Crafts With Emu Eggs
While bird eggs of many shapes and sizes are a common source for artistic inspiration, the egg of the emu carries a special charm. Large, thick and possessing a naturally beautiful color and texture, emu eggs make an excellent foundation for a variety of craft projects both purely decorative as well as functional and useful. If you have the good fortune to get your hands on an emu egg, put it to use in a project that suits your tastes and abilities.
Colors and Designs
Create crafts that draw focus to the simple beauty of the natural egg shape by covering the shell in a layer of colors and designs without a specific picture. Use an acrylic paint, or use enamel paint if you want extra shine. Because emu eggs have their own natural color and design, you might also leave much of this visible and accent it with small images like symbols or characters, or you could add some three-dimensional elements like cabochons or strings of beads.
Carved Eggs
Because the shell of an emu egg is so much thicker than those of smaller birds, you can safely etch designs into its surface without breaking it, creating the beautiful effect of white carved lines in the speckled slate-blue surface of the egg. For best results, sketch your designs in pencil on the egg's surface before scraping the egg with a small craft knife blade.
Egg Vase
Emu eggs make shapely and beautiful vases, whether you decide to combine this concept with other shell decorations or just cut a round hole in the top of the egg. Use a wide, shallow cup as a holder.
Egg Paintings
Use an emu egg as a canvas to create small paintings. The curved shape of the egg will give an interesting dimension to the images as viewers will have to move around the egg to see the whole thing.
Egg Dioramas
Cut out a large panel from an emu egg using a rotary cutter, then fill the inside of the egg with miniatures or figurines. Use this design as a display case for just one special figure, or create an entire scene of smaller pieces.
Egg Boxes
To make an emu egg box, turn the emu egg on its side, then cut it lengthwise into two equal halves. Attach a jewelry box hinge on one side using a strong glue or epoxy. Decorate the rims of the box with lace or jewelry findings.
