Steps To Make A Robin Mask

Use images of real robins as inspiration for your mask.

Create a robin mask for a theatrical production or video shoot, or simply as a craft for home or school. Robins are associated with spring as they are one of the first birds to appear when the weather becomes warm. These birds are easily recognizable by their red-orange breasts, bright blue eggs and the hopping manner in which they move. Their plumage is otherwise a black-gray color, and they grow between 9 and 11 inches tall. Display your robin mask when not in use if desired, or create a plethora of bird masks to sell at craft fairs and festivals.

Instructions

1. Sketch an outline of a robin mask on scrap paper for practice purposes. The mask should cover the eyes as well as part of the cheeks and forehead, and feature zigzag cuts around its borders in assorted sizes to mimic the look of feathers. Once you have a design you are happy with, cut it out of the scrap paper and trace the outline onto a piece of card stock.

2. Cut the design out of the card stock, including the eye holes. Punch holes on either sides of the mask for threading string through later.

3. Paint the entire mask a reddish-orange color, mix your paints if necessary to get the right hue. Allow to dry for about a half hour.

4. Detail the mask with gray-black paint around the eye sockets as well as the edges of the mask. Allow to dry for about 15 minutes.

5. Add additional embellishments to the mask if desired, such as red sequins around the mask borders and under the eye sockets. Attach the sequins to the mask with hot glue. Use a glue stick over the mask and sprinkle orange and red glitter over the whole project.

6. Thread a red piece of ribbon through the holes on the sides to complete the mask.
