Thanksgiving Crafts And Arts For Children

Thanksgiving is a good day for crafts.

In the United States, Thanksgiving Day is celebrated the third Thursday of November. The first Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621 by the Wampanoag Indians and the Plymouth colonists. They celebrated the autumn feast together as a way of giving thanks. In 1863, Thanksgiving was declared a national holiday. Have your children create Thanksgiving crafts to enhance your family's celebration. These activities are suited for kids of all ages, although younger children may need assistance.

Turkey Place Cards

Involve your children in decorating the table for the Thanksgiving meal by having them create turkey place cards. Use card stock so the cards will be stiff and durable. Children can use an ink pad and finger paints to make the turkey. Create the turkey body from a thumbprint, then use finger paints to create the feathers. Draw the eyes and mouth with crayons or markers. Write each guest's name on a card and place it on the table. Embellish the place cards with glitter, feathers or other decorations.

Sandwich-Cookie Turkeys

Sandwich-cookie turkeys are an edible treat for the Thanksgiving holiday. They are also easy to make. To make these treats, you will need chocolate sandwich cookies, frosting, candy corn and large gumdrops. Place some frosting on one of the cookies and then stick a second cookie on top of the first so that it sits at a 90 degree angle. Form the head of the turkey by "gluing" the gumdrop to the top cookie with frosting. Make feathers by sticking candy corn down into the top cookie edge.

Handprint Turkeys

Handprints can be used to make many different designs of turkeys. Have children trace and cut out their hands on brown construction paper. Form the body of the turkey with the hand and use the thumb as the head; the fingers serve as the feathers. Decorate the face of the turkey. Glue the turkey to a large piece of construction paper, then laminate the paper to make place mats that can be saved and used for future Thanksgivings.
