Using Tassels

Tassels are finishing ornaments in various decorative fabrics. They are made of gathered thread tied together and hung from a longer cord. They come in different sizes depending on their use. A good example of a tassel's use is on the mortarboard. The tassel hanging from the graduate's mortarboard is traditionally moved from right to left to signify one's graduation to another level of learning.

Tassels have several different uses aside from being staples in graduation ceremonies. They are used as decorative finishing for home décor and details in clothing and accessories. Here are some of the many ways on how you can use tassels.

How to Use Tassels

1. You can use tassels as tiebacks to keep your curtains secured on one side of the window. Simply install window hardware (little hooks) on both sides of the window frame. When you want to draw the curtains back, tie the tassels to the drapes to let sunlight into the room. For this, select chunky tassels that come with thick cording. The color also has to be coordinated with the color of your draperies.

2. Tie tassels on your poster bed. If you own a four-poster bed, two large tassels that are tied at the foot posts create an elegant detail.

3. Use tassels to decorate your pillows and table linens. With just a few hand stitches, you can sew small tassels onto the corners of your accentpillows or your table linens.

4. Use tassels as bookmarks or accent to a bookcase. If you love books, you can use a small tassel hanging from a thin cord to mark the page of the book you've been reading. You can also hang a tassel tieback from the knob of your bookcase or secretary/desk.

5. Create more elegant gift boxes with tassels. Instead of ribbons, use tassels to tie up your parcels or gift boxes.

6. Wear a small tassel as part of your outfit. Serena van der Woodsen pinned a tassel on her hair instead of wearing the complete tassel and mortarboard to her high school graduation in the Gossip Girl series. Another idea is to use a tassel to tie your hair in a ponytail. You can also wear a small cord tassel like a belt and make a simple wrap dress more interesting.
