Cupid Costume Suggestions For Kids

You can buy very nice set of angel wings in a costume shop.

In Roman mythology, Cupid was the son of Venus, the goddess of love. Know as the god of love, he was often portrayed with both wings and a bow and quiver. It was believed that his arrows, when shot into a person's heart, could inspire romantic love. Since then, an infant version of Cupid has become a major symbol of St. Valentine's Day, making his persona an ideal costume for a child.

Baby Costume

Cupid is usually portrayed as a winged baby holding a bow and quiver of arrows, so a pre-potty-trained baby in a diaper already has half of her costume. Draw and cut out a pair of wings of craft foam. Paint a white feather pattern on them with craft paint or glue and glitter. Pin or sew the wings to the back of a little pink t-shirt, and place it on your little Cupid. If desired, you can also use fabric paint to add a bow and heart-pointed arrow to the front of the shirt.

Toddler Costume

Dress your toddler or preschooler in a pair of pink pajamas or leotard and tights ensemble, as well as a pair of white shorts. Pin a pair of craft foam wings to the back of the child's shirt and give him a toy bow and heart-pointed arrow to carry.

Little Girl Costume

You can imbue the Cupid costume with a more ethereal look for a little girl. Dress her in a Valentine's Day-themed dress or a leotard and skirt ensemble. Either purchase an inexpensive pair of fairy wings from a costume shop or make your own from wire hangers and a pair of white or pink pantyhose; decorate them with white glue and glitter. Glue or sew hearts to a pair of pink or red slippers and give your feminine Cupid a toy bow and arrow set.

LIttle Boy Costume

Create a modern Cupid outfit for your little boy. Dress him in a red suit with a glittery bow tie and red hat with a heart-themed headband. Pin a pair of foam or wire hanger wings to the back of the jacket. Instead of a bow and arrow, give him a more technologically advanced weapon, like a squirt or foam dart gun.

Classical Costume

A classical Cupid might wear a Roman toga or a Greek chiton. To make the costume, cut a piece of white cloth the length of the child from shoulders to knee and the width of her full arm span. As decoration, add heart-themed trim to the fabric's hemline and neckline. Wrap the cloth around her body and pin it closed over the shoulders, belting the tunic closed with a red or gold sash; pin wings to the fabric's back. Give the child a realistic-looking bow and arrow and place a wreath of laurel around her head.
