Ancient Rome, the Renaissance, the Victorian era and the Roaring '20s are time periods that stand out for their unique customs, styles and traditions. Having a wedding inspired by these eras will be a creative and fun experience that you and your guests will remember.
Ancient Greek Wedding
Greek gods, mythology and poetry provide plenty of ideas in planning a unique ancient Greek wedding. The wedding gown could draw inspiration from statues of a Greek goddess such as Aphrodite, and the groom's garb could be inspired by Greek heroes. Wear wreaths made of laurel as a headdress. Hold the wedding outdoors to celebrate in the beauty and lushness of nature, and decorate with pillars and urns filled with flowers. Invitations could be printed on parchment to look like ancient books of poetry. A guest book could be made with parchment paper and dowels to replicate the design of an ancient scroll.
Renaissance Wedding
The Renaissance era represents a rebirth of culture, arts and music. The wedding dress can draw inspiration from the garb of royals, made of jewel-toned, large-print brocade and silk fabrics. Decorations such as tapestries, lush flower arrangements and elaborate candle sconces would create the look of a castle. Using candlelight would add to the romantic charm. Invitations can be created with a calligraphic font, written in Old English and printed on parchment paper. Hire a harpist or a wandering minstrel to perform and entertain.
Haunted Victorian Wedding
Though many may think a Victorian wedding requires a formal ceremony, there is another unique way to celebrate this era. People in the Victorian era are known for high tea and manners, but they also had a fascination with ghosts and death. A haunted Victorian Gothic wedding theme that takes place on Halloween would be very unique and fun. The bride's gown could be inspired by traditional Victorian styles, and the groom could wear a tailcoat and top hat. Encourage guests to wear masks to add an air of mystery. Decorate in a traditional Victorian style, adding a haunting appearance with candelabras and dark-colored flowers. Play dark classical or harpsichord music, and set up fortune-telling games to entertain your guests.
Roaring '20s Wedding
A Roaring '20s wedding is ideal for people who want lively entertainment and dancing at their celebration. The bridal gown could be created in the style of a '20s dress, or the more flirtatious look of a flapper dress, and complemented by a feather boa. The groom could wear a sharp pin-striped suit and fedora. Think Art Deco and vaudeville when decorating and creating invitations. Play jazz and ragtime music, and be sure to leave a space in the center of the room for a dance floor. Serve Champagne in tall, graceful glasses, and use elegant flower centerpieces with white calla lilies.
