DIY Wood Centerpieces
Wooden centerpieces bring a touch of nature inside, especially when you've left the wood in its original form. The shape and texture of bark becomes an art form of its own. Combine pieces of natural wood with other natural materials such as pine sprigs, acorns and cranberries for a bountiful centerpiece that will dress up any table. Add the glow of safe candlelight for a touch of romance for your dining pleasure.
Cranberry Log Centerpiece
Find an interesting wood log of birch, elm, pine or any other type of wood native to your area. Look for one with a crick or twist in it to make it more interesting.
Saw your log to the ideal size for a centerpiece that will fit your table. For an average-size, six-seating dining room table, aim for a length of about 2 feet. Hollow out the center of the log with a saw and carving tools, leaving the sides as thin as you can get them without having them crack.
Lay a bed of evergreen down in the center of your table, using just enough sprigs so when you put the log on top of them, they wisp out from underneath a couple of inches all around it.
Fill the hollowed log up to the rim with fresh cranberries, then nestle six to eight flameless tea lights on top of them. Turn on your tea lights for dining ambience-a safe way to provide candlelight when using flammable materials.
Forest Basket Centerpiece
Use a bread basket for a base and place floral foam inside of it. Cut the pieces so they cover most of the inside of the basket.
Take the family on a twig-hunting expedition to your nearest wooded area. Collect leafless twigs from all different types of trees in all sizes from 6 inches to about 18 inches. Look for twigs with interesting shapes and colors, and gather at least 100-the more the better. Collect about 20 acorns and 20 dark green needled pine sprigs.
Lay half of the pine sprigs down on top of the floral foam, covering it lightly but completely. Press the twigs standing straight up into the floral foam using the sizes randomly throughout the basket, dispersing the twigs evenly. Weave the remaining pine sprigs between the twigs, keeping them close to the base. Next, evenly place acorns throughout the basket at the base of the twigs and on top of the pine sprigs.
Wedge 10 to 12 flameless tea lights between the twigs evenly throughout the basket. Turn them on before dining, and enjoy the glow of light through your natural wooden centerpiece. Do not use real candles with this flammable centerpiece.
