How You Can Fresh paint A Black Burst Finish

Practice feathering on cardboard before applying the paint to your guitar.

Burst finishes are one of the most popular finishes on electric guitars. These guitars are typically brightest in the middle and fade to a darker color on the edges, although the opposite can be true in some burst patterns. Black bursts typically go from a light center color to black edges, although any color with black at the edges could be called a black burst. Painting black bursts can be difficult to feather the paint correctly, but the technique can be done with spray paint, air brushing or a paint gun.

Instructions

1. Trace the guitar body on two pieces of poster board. Cut out one approximately two inches from the edge of the guitar all the way around. Trim the other to between 1/2 and 1 inch smaller than the body of the guitar. This gives a very shallow burst. Trim the templates smaller for a deeper burst.

2. Shake the can of yellow spray paint for at least 30 seconds to mix the paint. Coat the entire front of the guitar with two to three coats of yellow paint. Allow it to dry for at least four hours before handling.

3. Place push pins in the smaller template with the pin up, allowing the template to sit elevated above the body of the guitar. Shake the red spray paint and hold it at least 18 inches from the guitar. Paint the edges of the guitar over the template.

4. Carefully lift the template and add more feathering as necessary around the border between the yellow and the red by holding the can 2 feet from the body and spraying it. Allow to dry for up to four hours, or until dry to the touch.

5. Place the push pins in the larger template and elevate it above the body of the guitar. Mix the black spray paint and follow the curves of the guitar body to add black to the edges and sides of the guitar. Lift the template and add feathering into the red as needed. Allow it to dry overnight for complete curing.

6. Spray with at least three to four coats of clear lacquer, allowing it to dry completely between each coat.
